MPUSD TO HOST DISTRICTWIDE HACKATHON AT SEASIDE HIGH SCHOOL

New State-of-the-Art Digital Library and MakerSpace to house event

MEDIA INVITED: Good visuals for camera and print; Advance stories welcome

Seaside, CA - The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District will proudly host its fourth districtwide Hackathon at Seaside High School, located at 2200 Noche Buena Street in Seaside, on Wednesday, December 11 from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The Hackathon will be held in the school’s new state-of-the-art digital Library and MakerSpace centrally located on campus.

The first districtwide Hackathon was held with approximately 120 student participants under the leadership of then Seaside High teacher Tessa Brown. Today Brown serves as Seaside High’s assistant principal, and is once again leading the charge of this outstanding event.

“This event has grown tremendously in popularity,” said Brown. “This year, we have seven schools attending and over a 20 adults assisting. It’s a great way for students to engage in hands-on learning with a friendly competition among schools.”

Students can create as a team of four or on their own to design and build their own app. No experience is needed.

In recent years, MPUSD has expanded computer literacy exposure to students. All middle and high school students possess their own district-owned Chromebook that come to and from school as a vehicle to learn. Elementary school students also have access to classroom Chromebooks. The district anticipates going 1:1 with Chromebooks districtwide in the coming years. It also offers Exploring Computer Science, AP Computer Science Principles, and Introduction to Data Science. Through a dual enrollment partnership with Monterey Peninsula College, MPUSD offers college-level courses in Programming Fundamentals (Python) and Programming Methods (Java).  And two career technical education pathways: Design, Visual, and Media Arts and Engineering Design.
