2022 Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

Del Rey Woods Elementary School takes steps to build a better future where racism and all forms of bullying have no place

Seaside, CA - Students and staff at Del Rey Woods Elementary School in Seaside, California are participating in The Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on Monday, November 14, 2022. The walk will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Mal’s Market on Noche Buena Street and students and staff will walk together to Del Rey Woods Elementary School located at 1281 Plumas Avenue in Seaside. Students will receive a purple beanie, pin, and a wristband commemorating the day and walk.

The school committed to walk together to practice the golden rule - treat others as you would want them to treat you - and to honor civil rights leader Ruby Bridges and her brave walk to school on November 14, 1960, as she became one of the first Black children to integrate an all-white school in New Orleans. During the walk, students and staff will also dialogue about kindness and take steps to build a better future where racism, and all forms of bullying, have no place at Del Rey Woods Elementary and the school community.

“By participating in the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, we hope to empower our students to use their voice and inspire others to spread kindness,” said Nellie Marrero, Bilingual Community Liaison, Del Rey Woods Elementary School. “Ruby has challenged us to commit to a better tomorrow and to stomp out racism and bullying.”

The Ruby Bridges annual walk to school day began in 2018 by students in South San Francisco, and in 2021, the Ruby Bridges Foundation in partnership with AAA supported the walk to school day with more than 90,000 students across 36 states participating.
