MPUSD Schools Lead the Way: State Honors 14 Campuses for PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) Success
10 Schools Achieve Prestigious Platinum Status, Celebrating Top-Tier Success in Supporting Students' Well-Being
Monterey, CA - The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District is celebrating a remarkable achievement as 14 of its schools have been honored by California PBIS for their exceptional commitment in the 2023-2024 school year to Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The district and its 14 schools were notified this week that they received recognition for their faithful implementation of PBIS, a framework designed to enhance student success through positive school culture and evidence-based practices.
Out of these 14 recognized schools, an impressive 10 have earned the highest distinction—Platinum status—reflecting their outstanding success in fostering supportive learning environments and achieving both academic and behavioral outcomes.
The following MPUSD schools received recognition for the 2023-2024 school year:
- Platinum: Del Rey Woods Elementary School, the Dual Language Academy of the Monterey Peninsula, La Mesa School, Los Arboles Middle School, Marina High School, Marshall Elementary School, Monte Vista TK-8, Olson Elementary School, Ord Terrace Elementary School, and Seaside Middle School
- Silver: Seaside High School
- Bronze: Central Coast High School, Crumpton Elementary School, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School of the Arts
"We understand the vital role a positive school culture plays in enhancing student learning outcomes, and we're extremely proud of our investment in PBIS over the past 10 years. The impact of this work is truly paying off. The awards our schools have received reflect excellence in implementing the core features of PBIS, and they are a testament to the dedication of our staff and students," said PK Diffenbaugh, Superintendent, Monterey Peninsula Unified School District.
MPUSD and its schools will be honored at the Ninth-Annual California PBIS Conference in Sacramento on October 9 - 11, 2024.
In 2015, California PBIS launched a statewide recognition system to acknowledge schools that implement PBIS with fidelity to the national framework. Schools are recognized at Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum levels based on their effectiveness in promoting positive student behavior and success.
“We sincerely appreciate the hard work and commitment of our schools in implementing PBIS with fidelity, creating conditions that maximize social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes for ALL students,” California PBIS said in a congratulatory letter to MPUSD and its schools. “Your dedication to students, families, and communities is a major contributing factor to educational excellence across California.”
“We are incredibly proud of our schools for their steadfast commitment to fostering positive learning environments through the consistent application of PBIS practices. These awards truly highlight the excellence of our educators and students in creating supportive school climates where every student can thrive,” said Donnie Everett, Assistant Superintendent, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, Monterey Peninsula Unified School District.
This year’s honors further solidify MPUSD’s position as a leader in student well-being and academic excellence. The district will continue to build on these achievements, ensuring that all students thrive in a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.

ABOUT PBIS
California PBIS is a collaborative organization using evidence-based, culturally relevant practices to build the capacity for all stakeholders in the implementation of PBIS as a multi-tiered system following the National PBIS Blueprints for professional development, implementation, and evaluation. California PBIS defines PBIS as a proactive framework for improving the adoption and implementation of evidence-based interventions. By focusing on a continuum of support across school-wide and classroom settings, the framework emphasizes creating a positive environment that benefits all students. As a system, PBIS is not a specific curriculum or intervention but rather a comprehensive approach to fostering a culture of success. It encourages the creation of positive, supportive relationships between school staff and students to enhance both academic and behavioral outcomes. Learn more here.
