MPUSD Selected for Statewide Early Learning Cohort to Strengthen Math and Science Education

Monterey, CA – The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District is proud to announce its selection as a recipient of the Count Play Explore Professional Learning and Coaching Grant, administered by the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools, Early Care and Education Department. MPUSD is one of only 30 organizations across California invited to participate in this highly competitive cohort, chosen from a pool of 185 applicants. The grant is in the amount of $350,000 from April 2025 through December 2027.

“Count Play Explore is more than a grant,” said Cresta McIntosh, Associate Superintendent, Educational Services. “It’s a statewide movement to strengthen California’s early education systems through collaborative learning, coaching, and shared innovation. MPUSD is honored to be a part of this impactful work.”

The CPE PLC Grant builds statewide capacity in early mathematics and science education, which are key foundational areas of learning for children from birth through 3rd grade. This prestigious opportunity supports agencies that provide professional development, coaching, and technical assistance to the early care and education workforce.

Participation in the CPE PLC Cohort empowers MPUSD’s early learning coaches and facilitators to:

  • Deepen their expertise in early math, science, and computer science education.
  • Enhance the quality and reach of training for ECE professionals across the district.
  • Leverage community resources and develop implementation plans that support early learners’ success in STEM subjects.

MPUSD has prioritized early education for more than a decade, investing in foundational programs that support student success from the start. From expanding Transitional Kindergarten access to aligning curriculum and coaching through grade 3, the district has remained focused on ensuring every child builds a strong academic and social-emotional base. Participation in the Count Play Explore cohort further solidifies these efforts, reinforcing MPUSD’s commitment to giving its earliest learners the strongest possible start.

“Early childhood education lays the groundwork for lifelong learning,” said McIntosh. “Being selected for the CPE Cohort underscores MPUSD’s commitment to high-quality early learning and our efforts to equip educators with the tools and training needed to spark curiosity, problem-solving, and critical thinking in our youngest students.”
