39 MPUSD Scholars Selected for Evans College Incentive Program by the Monterey Peninsula College Foundation

Monterey, CA - The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District is pleased to announce that 39 scholars from Central Coast High School, Marina High School, Monterey High School and Seaside High School were selected as part of the Evans College Incentive Program by the Monterey Peninsula College Foundation. A total of 54 recipients were selected from Monterey County and MPUSD students represented 72% of the awardees.

“We are incredibly proud of our high school students,” said PK Diffenbaugh, Superintendent, Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. “This is a record number of MPUSD scholars receiving this generous scholarship and will allow those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to pursue college due to financial hardship the means to change the trajectory of their future.”

The following provides a breakdown of recipients per school:

  • Central Coast High School -17
  • Marina High School - 3
  • Monterey High School - 6
  • Seaside High School - 13

Marina, Monterey and Seaside high schools are MPUSD’s comprehensive high schools, and Central Coast high school is the alternative educational option school, where students attend to recover credits toward graduation.

“I applaud the diligent efforts of our college and career specialists, school counselors, as well as other MPUSD staff, who supported our students through the process of becoming an Evans Scholar and I thank the Monterey Peninsula College Foundation for their investment in our students,” continued Diffenbaugh.

According to the Monterey Peninsula College Foundation website, the Evans College Incentive Program provides high school students the opportunity to earn $4,500 in financial assistance, paid incrementally as they further their education at MPC, and includes a final $1,000 payment upon transfer to a four-year college or university. Students must demonstrate financial need, face challenges or disadvantages that make them unlikely to attend or succeed at completing college, as well as exemplify the potential to be successful if provided support and financial assistance.

Additionally, the MPC Foundation will assist students in getting their tuition fees completely covered through the MPC Promise and connect them to programs and financial assistance offered by the college.
