Three MPUSD High Schools Unite to Create Community Mural for Monterey Bay FC

What began as an idea between art teachers grew into a large-scale community collaboration that brought together students from Marina High School, Monterey High School, and Seaside High School to create a vibrant new mural for Monterey Bay FC.
Installed near the front entrance to Cardinale Stadium in Seaside, the mural celebrates the unique character of the Monterey Peninsula while showcasing the creativity, teamwork, and talent of MPUSD students.
The project was months in the making. Art teachers from the three comprehensive high schools worked together to develop a concept that reflected the region's culture, environment, and diverse communities. Students contributed ideas, sketches, and artistic elements before bringing the design to life on a series of large movable panels.
"This mural is a visual representation of collaboration," said Marina High School senior Amara Long. "Three schools were able to come together and make something so beautiful. It's a testament to the teamwork and close-knit community we have on our peninsula."
The mural features imagery that reflects life throughout the Monterey Bay region, including marine life, agriculture, paragliders soaring above the dunes, and other local landmarks and experiences. Messages displayed in English, Spanish, Pashto, and Tagalog help represent the many cultures and languages spoken throughout the community.
"I enjoy how inclusive it is," said Seaside High School senior Soledad Gonzales Lopez. "There are different languages, and a lot of people can understand it. It's something for everyone."
For many students, the project provided their first opportunity to participate in a public mural.
Marina High School senior Laila Sanchez said one of the most rewarding aspects was seeing the separate pieces come together into a unified work of art.
"It's cool to see how all the different schools worked on it," Sanchez said. "It looks different but then the same at the same time."
Students began painting the panels in February after months of planning and coordination. Because the mural was created across multiple campuses, teachers and students had to carefully coordinate colors, timelines, panel layouts, and design elements to ensure the final installation aligned seamlessly.
"Mural planning is a lot of work," said Seaside High School art teacher Sylvia Vasquez. "We had moving panels that traveled between schools, and lots of students and teachers involved. It took communication, trust, and teamwork to make sure everything came together."
Vasquez said she was especially proud of the students' commitment throughout the process, including returning during the summer to complete finishing touches.
The project also allowed students to apply classroom skills in a real-world setting.
"Students take art classes and learn foundational skills," said Marina High School art teacher Jennifer Shayani. "What's cool about doing a mural is that they apply those skills to real life, and they're working in collaboration with each other. This is something they can put on their resume, and it's a great opportunity to connect community with each other."
The partnership with Monterey Bay FC provided students with an opportunity to create artwork that will be enjoyed by thousands of community members and visitors throughout the year.
As fans pass by the mural on their way to matches, they will see more than a colorful piece of public art. They will see the result of months of planning, creativity, and collaboration among students from across MPUSD.
"It connects us all," Long said.
