MPUSD Board of Education Recognizes Juneteenth and Reaffirms Commitment to Equity and Inclusion

The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District Board of Education adopted a resolution on June 9, 2026, recognizing June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth, honoring the significance of this historic day and reaffirming the district’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and educational opportunity for all students.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed the last enslaved African Americans of their freedom more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The day is recognized as the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States and became a federal holiday in 2021.
Through the resolution, MPUSD acknowledges Juneteenth as both a celebration of freedom and an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice. The Board recognizes the lasting contributions of African Americans to the nation’s history, culture, innovation, and progress, while also acknowledging the barriers and inequities that continued long after slavery was abolished.
“As educators, we have a responsibility to ensure students learn an honest and comprehensive history that reflects diverse perspectives and experiences,” said Superintendent PK Diffenbaugh. “Juneteenth provides an important opportunity to honor the past, celebrate resilience, and continue building a future where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.”
The resolution aligns with MPUSD’s 2025-2026 theme, Honoring the Past. Shaping the Future., and reflects the district’s ongoing efforts to foster welcoming and inclusive learning environments where all students, families, and staff have access to opportunity and support.
The Board’s action also reinforces the district’s commitment to its strategic priorities, including improving outcomes for all students, eliminating performance gaps, and recruiting, developing, and retaining a diverse, high-quality workforce.

MPUSD encourages students, staff, families, and community members to use Juneteenth as a time for reflection, learning, and meaningful dialogue about freedom, equality, and justice.
By recognizing Juneteenth, the district reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that every person matters and that education continues to serve as a pathway toward understanding, opportunity, and a more equitable future for all.
