Maiaika Velazquez was elected to the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District Board of Trustees in August 2022 and sworn into office December 2022.

Maiaika resides in Seaside and is the proud mother of an amazing 13-year old special needs child. She is passionate about education and ran for the Board of Education “to provide a voice for low income and working class families that sometimes felt they were not heard.”

Looking to adopt a healthier and sustainable lifestyle, she enjoys growing food and home cooked meals. She began gardening in the spring of 2019 and attempted growing everything from lemons to lettuce to greens, melons, and more. She has even begun learning about canning and permaculture to redesign the landscape of her family’s home.

When she isn’t gardening, she can be found reading or listening to books on everything from poetry to history to self improvement. She is also a lover of most music genres and can often be found researching their origins.

Maiaika earned an associate arts degree from Monterey Peninsula College in 2015 and went on to graduate from Arizona State University with a bachelor of arts degree in Mass Communication and Media Studies in 2018.

She always had a love for working with her hands and initially pursued a degree in engineering just after high school. Starting on the soldering assembly line through a temp company at Motorola, she would eventually be certified through their high rail assembly program. This was a program designed to train employees on preparing components, microscopic and larger, slated to potentially leave earth’s atmosphere..

Following up her Motorola experience, she discovered her place in client relations. She would work with both private sector and government clients facilitating purchases and bids for everything from computer and server equipment to other office equipment and supplies.

This would lead her to her most recent career track in the mortgage industry. Having worked as a sales assistant, processor and admin for two mortgage companies and then a boutique mortgage broker, this allowed her time to pursue other interests and to volunteer her time in the nonprofit sector.

Due to her child’s diagnosis, she currently works from home consulting for property investors on commercial loans. She also provides respite care on weekends for a family member with special needs.
