Behavior Support

Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD) Student Support Services provides Behavior Specialist Services to students served in the STEPS (Moderate/Severe), KEY (Social/Emotional), and LEAP (Autism Spectrum) Programs. MPUSD Behavior Specialists also assist district personnel with student behavior issues and assessment in general education. 

The principles of applied behavioral analysis and other evidence-based methods are used to decrease challenging behaviors and teach skills.

Important elements of the behavior services include:

  • ongoing, continuous training for staff on methods of dealing with problem behaviors
  • individual support for students
  • behavior intervention services
  • identifying and addressing issues that may impede the student's academic success/achievement
  • conducting Functional Behavioral Assessments
  • developing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)
  • comprehensive, integrated, and collaborative approach that includes the student, school, parents and other family members
  • analysis of classroom environments and consultation to promote pro-social behaviors
  • programs designed to foster a positive school environment that allows students to thrive in spite of challenges they may be facing
  • through a collaborative team approach, assist students to access the opportunities to improve independence, inclusion and overall quality of life. We do this through evidence based, pragmatic treatment, consultation and teaching based on the principals of ABA
