Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO) Afterschool Programs
Welcome to the Expanded Learning Opportunities Department!
VISION
Ensure that every child achieves academic and social excellence to be career, college, and life ready.
MISSION
Empower students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become highly effective, culturally diverse citizens, through the daily use of dynamic hands-on academic and social enrichment activities.
The Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO) Department provides safe, engaging afterschool programs for all Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through grade 8 campuses in Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. Programs run every school day immediately after dismissal until 6:00 p.m. (up to nine hours daily), with an additional 30 non-school days of expanded learning offered throughout the year.
All programs include:
-
Academic support
-
Nutritious snack
-
Physical activity
-
Enrichment activities
There is no cost for students experiencing homelessness, foster youth, English Learners, or students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals (FRPM). Financial assistance is available for families facing hardship. Some programs charge a fee for students who do not meet these criteria; district employees receive a discount. Space is limited.
Priority enrollment is given to students who:
-
Are experiencing homelessness or in foster care
-
Qualify for FRPM
-
Are English Learners
-
Were previously enrolled in ASA
-
Have siblings in the program
-
Support balanced grade-level groups
Students are expected to attend daily and remain until program dismissal, with consideration for family needs. Consistent attendance, participation, and positive behavior are required. Special education students are welcome; an IEP meeting may be held prior to enrollment to ensure appropriate support.
Once programs are full, school- and grade-level waitlists are created and referrals are made to community partners. Waitlists do not carry over year to year. Each afterschool program reflects the unique needs of its school community, please use the links below to explore options at your child’s school.
MPUSD also partners with off-campus afterschool providers, including the Boys & Girls Club (Seaside), Marina Teen Center, YMCA (Monterey), and The Village Project (Seaside).
