Exploration of Health Careers and
Personal Wellness - CONCENTRATOR

This foundational course for MPUSD’s Health Science and Medical Technology industry sector will provide students with an opportunity to explore and understand personal wellness, the history of health professions, and the extensive range of career options within the healthcare industry. Students will achieve competency in medical terminology, fundamental human anatomy and physiology, medical asepsis, patient confidentiality, medical ethics, and the legal aspects of the healthcare industry with the overarching theme of personal health. Students will explore the use of several different types of instrumentation that is utilized in various medical settings. Students will retrieve and analyze copies of medical and clinical records. Students will explore the major career fields and be able to distinguish between entry-level, technical, and professional level positions within each area. The course may be used as a prerequisite or co-requisite course for nursing, direct patient care, and sports medicine. Exploration of Health Careers will support students as they develop communication and interpersonal skills for success.
 
Patient Care and Personal Wellness - CAPSTONE

Patient Care and Personal Wellness is designed to integrate concepts and skills students are developing throughout the pathway for work in direct patient care settings. Students will practice medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, patient intake procedures, vital signs, physical measurements, procedures to prepare patients for examinations. Integrated throughout the course are career preparation standards that include basic academic skills, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, safety, and technology. Worksite learning is an optional component of this course and is available to eligible students. Students will have the opportunity to become certified in Basic Life Support: CPR and A.E.D.
Introduction to Nursing - CONCENTRATOR

Introduction to Nursing is designed to teach students the clinical skills necessary for employment in a variety of medical settings. Students will practice medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, patient intake procedures, vital signs, physical measurements, procedures to prepare patients for examinations. Integrated throughout the course are career preparation standards that include basic academic skills, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, safety, and technology. Work-based learning opportunities will be provided throughout the course. Note: A negative TB test might be required for participation in some work-based learning opportunities.
Emergency Nursing - CAPSTONE

Emergency Nursing is designed to teach students the skills necessary for employment in a variety of emergency health care settings, including but not limited to acute and urgent care facilities, hospital emergency rooms, emergency medical services (EMS), and to prepare students to take the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (CPR and AED) and First Aid certifications. Students will practice medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, emergency patient assessment, emergency care, and treatment procedures, as well as out-of-hospital acute medical care. Integrated throughout the course are career preparation standards that include basic academic skills, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, safety, and technology. Work-based learning is an integral component of this course. Note: A negative TB test might be required for participation in work-based learning job shadowing or internships.
 
Health Science: An Experience in Healthcare - CONCENTRATOR

Health Science Careers provides a student experience that develops career-ready practices through career exploration in the context of project-based learning. All knowledge and skills are based on career cluster and pathway standards to promote college and career readiness. This course is designed to be a career survey and lab for students to determine which health career they have the most interest and aptitude. Ten Healthcare Areas (HCA) include Biotechnology R&D, Clinical Lab Practices, Dentistry, Emergency Medical Technician, Forensics, Medical Imaging, Mental Health, Nursing, Ophthalmology, and Pharmacology. Students will: work productively in small teams of 2, use technology to enhance productivity, plan education and career paths, utilize critical thinking, define problems and persevere in solving them, demonstrate creativity and innovation, employ valid and reliable research methods, and apply appropriate academic & technical skills. Every unit requires that students submit evidence of learning for each project, write in context (narrative & argumentative), and complete 2 objective assessments as proof of knowledge and skill attainment
Sports Medicine Kinesiology - CONCENTRATOR

This course is designed for students interested in science-related careers with an emphasis on sports medicine. Students will receive core classroom instruction in kinesiology, biomechanics, anatomy, physiology, healing processes, CPR/First Aid/AED training, injury evaluation, and basic knowledge of sports medicine, personal training, physical therapy, and fitness instructor. Also, students will take part in labs in the classroom that will enable them to use a hands-on approach to understanding the lecture materials.
Sports Medicine Athletic Training - CAPSTONE

In this CTE and science standards-based course, students will learn about the anatomy and physiology of the human body, the interaction of body systems, theories and methods of prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of sports and exercise-related injuries. The body’s chemical response to pharmaceutical agents, disease, injury, and stress will be addressed. Students will use scientific methods of observation, investigation, experimentation, data collection, and data analysis. Laboratory and practicum work is performed both in and outside of the classroom. Students are provided substantial opportunities to practice and apply learned theories and techniques working with school athletes, athletic trainers, and other practicing professionals in the field after school hour
 

Biotechnology

Biotechnology 1 - CONCENTRATOR

Biotechnology 1 is a course designed to provide students with the fundamental concepts, principles, and practices from the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering used in the field of biotechnology and health science. The knowledge and skills acquired in Biotechnology 1 will lay the foundation for students moving onto Biotechnology 2. The lecture and laboratory portion of the course will require students to apply science concepts and theory, utilize critical thinking, and practice communication skills through informal and technical writing, speaking, and reading, all of which are competencies required in the field of biotechnology and health science. Students will explore and evaluate career opportunities in the field of biotechnology and health science by way of guest speakers, site visits to biotechnology companies and facilities, and researching career opportunities in related fields. Opportunities for post-secondary education and employment will be explored allowing students to gain a broad awareness of both scientific and non-scientific career paths.
 
Biotechnology 2 - CAPSTONE

Biotechnology 2 revisits the scientific principles, concepts, theories, and laboratory practices learned in Biotechnology 1. Biotechnology 2 will emphasize more depth and application of the foundations established in the first year of the course. In addition, students will formulate, design, and carry out an independent scientific research project. Additional topics building upon Biotechnology 1 will include exploring the process of natural products drug discovery, biostatistics applied to data, DNA forensics, the Human Genome Project, plant tissue cloning, and maintaining a digital laboratory notebook. Students will explore job opportunities, internships, and job shadowing in the field of biotechnology. Opportunities for post-secondary education and employment will be explored allowing students to gain a broad awareness of both scientific and non-scientific career paths.
