Composting at MPUSD

As of May 2022, 13 MPUSD elementary schools and preschools have started separating food waste from trash to create compost at the Monterey Regional Waste Management District facility in Marina.

This is in response to a state mandate, requiring schools divert food waste to lessen methane created at the landfill. Methane is a greenhouse gas. It also enriches soil for local parks and agriculture.

During the 2022-2023 school year, all MPUSD Middle and High schools will begin composting as well.

MPUSD is actively recruiting students to participate in the Green Team at school sites. This leadership group helps sort food scraps and waste and helps other students learn about the process of composting.
