The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District proudly acknowledges October 12–18, 2025, as Week of the School Administrator and publicly recognizes the essential contributions our school leaders make to student success.
Why Leadership Matters
Leadership matters in California’s public education system and for the more than six million students it serves. California Education Code Section 44015.1 designates the second full week of October each year as Week of the School Administrator to highlight the importance of educational leadership at the school, district, and county levels.
At MPUSD, administrators make up just six percent of our total employee base, yet their impact is immeasurable. They help guide the path for more than 9,300 students across our district, from transitional kindergarten through 12th grade.
Who Are Administrators?
While many picture principals or district office leaders, the term “school administrator” encompasses a wide range of educational leadership roles, including:
-
Superintendents and assistant superintendents
-
Principals and assistant principals
-
Special education and adult education leaders
-
Curriculum and assessment leaders
-
School business officials and classified educational leaders
-
Other district and site leaders who drive programs and student achievement
Leaders with Experience and Heart
Most school administrators began their careers as teachers, carrying forward a deep passion for student learning. The average administrator has served in public education for more than a decade, with many superintendents contributing 20+ years of service. This experience is invaluable as they lead schools, mentor staff, and create the conditions for students to thrive.
Lean, but Mighty
Public schools operate with lean management structures. Compared to other industries, from transportation and manufacturing to utilities and publishing, education employs fewer managers and supervisors. That makes the dedication, efficiency, and vision of our administrators even more critical.
A Time to Say Thank You
The future of public education in California depends on the quality of its leadership. At MPUSD, we celebrate and honor our administrators this week and every week. Parents, guardians, teachers, staff, and our community are encouraged to join us in expressing gratitude to the leaders who inspire excellence, support achievement, and help shape the future of our students.
To every MPUSD administrator: Thank you for your tireless commitment, your steady leadership, and your unwavering belief in the power of public education.
