The Great Shakeout (earthquake drill) will occur on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 10:30 am. Generally, this event typically takes place on a Thursday, but due to PBIS training, we will be holding our drill on a Friday. Please note the following schedule for the morning.

  • 10:00 am - Los Arboles Middle School and Seaside Middle School conduct their evacuation.

  • 10:30 am - Beginning of Drill for all MPUSD Campuses Except Los Arboles and Seaside Middle School

We will practice earthquake "drop, cover, and hold-on" procedures and practice using our emergency radios. Below is a summary of what will take place.  To learn more about how this drill is being done nationwide, read more here.

Pre-Drill Practice with Radios

On Monday, October 13, at 10:00 am, we will practice using our radios. Please practice using it outside and not plugged into a power source. Also, please feel free to make transmissions any time from now and in the days leading up to the 17th.

Beginning of Drill For All MPUSD Campuses and Locations Except Los Arboles and Seaside Middle School

  • At 10:30 am on October 17, 2025, announce on your PA system that the Earthquake Drill has been initiated and all students and staff should "Drop, Cover, and Hold on." This video provides guidance on best practices.

  • After 60 seconds, give the all clear and advise all staff to safely evacuate to the designated evacuation points areas. Radios need to be brought outside.

Radio Calls (5 minutes later) and Directing Staff and Students Back To Classes and Offices

  • At approximately 10:35 am, we will begin radio calls to sites.

  • It is up to whoever is leading the drill to issue the all-clear to staff and students so they can return to class. You do not need to wait for radio contact for this to happen. It is not necessary for the whole school to be outside while we practice our radio calls. The important part of this drill is the evacuation and use of our emergency communication system.

  • Refer to this link for detailed procedures on the drill and explicit instructions on how to use the radio.

Feel free to reach out with any questions.
