MPUSD Recognized Nationally for Transforming Education and Supporting the Whole Child

What does it look like when a school system is designed around students, not just academically, but as whole people?

That question is at the center of a new national book, Whole Learners, Whole Systems: Transforming School Districts for Adolescent Thriving, which features the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District as one of a select group of districts leading that work, reflecting Superintendent PK Diffenbaugh’s long-standing vision of building one of the finest school districts in the nation.

Written by Sarah Fine, Santiago Rincón-Gallardo, and Michael Fullan, the book highlights school systems across the country that are redesigning education to better support student learning, well-being, and future success.

MPUSD is featured alongside Anaheim Union High School District, Fresno Unified School District, Lindsay Unified School District, Oakland Unified School District, and Shasta County Office of Education, placing it among a small group of districts recognized for systemwide transformation.

An Ecosystem for Learning and Well-being

In its chapter, titled “MPUSD: An Ecosystem for Adolescent Learning and Well-being,” the district is described as an “ecosystem for adolescent learning and well-being,” where students are not just participating in school, but actively shaping their educational journeys.

According to the authors, students are “actively shaping their educational journeys,” supported by opportunities that connect learning to their interests and future goals.

From ceramics studios to career pathways, students are given opportunities to explore their interests, build skills, and connect their learning to the world around them.

A Decade of Transformation

The recognition reflects a decade of intentional work.

As highlighted in the chapter, MPUSD has evolved from a more fragmented system into one grounded in coherence, student-centered learning, and strong leadership.

That transformation has been guided by:

  • A clear vision and strategic alignment
  • Investment in leadership at every level
  • A focus on continuous improvement
  • Ongoing engagement with students, staff, and community

More Than Academics

The book also points to MPUSD’s commitment to supporting the whole child.

Across the district, students have access to:

  • Mental health professionals and wellness supports
  • Career technical education and college pathways
  • Flexible learning opportunities and enrichment
  • Programs that foster belonging and connection

The publication emphasizes that environments centered on belonging, connection, and purpose are key to student engagement and success.

Leadership as the Lever

A central theme in both MPUSD’s work and the book is the importance of leadership.

The chapter highlights how leadership development across the system has helped create a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement, reinforcing the belief that leadership is the lever for meaningful change.

A National Model

Being featured in Whole Learners, Whole Systems affirms what the MPUSD community already knows: meaningful change happens when systems are intentionally designed with students at the center.

“This has always been our aim to build one of the finest school districts in the nation,” said district Superintendent PK Diffenbaugh. “To see MPUSD included in this work affirms the direction we’ve taken together as a community, and the impact our schools are having on students.”

“This recognition belongs to our entire community,” he added. “It reflects the collective effort to create schools where every student feels a sense of belonging and has a path forward.”
