MPUSD Board of Education Proclaims Classified School Employee Week

The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District Board of Education proclaims May 17 - 23, 2026, as Classified School Employee Week, recognizing the vital role classified professionals play in supporting students, staff, and school communities across the district.

The Board will adopt a resolution at its meeting on May 12, 2026, celebrating the commitment, skill, and care of classified employees who serve in a wide range of essential roles throughout MPUSD. This year’s theme, “Trusted. Inclusive. Unified.”, reflects the strong relationships, inclusive practices, and shared mission that define the work of classified staff across Marina, Monterey, and Seaside.

“At MPUSD, our classified professionals are the backbone of our schools,” said PK Diffenbaugh, Superintendent, Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. “They create the conditions for learning every day ensuring our campuses are safe, welcoming, and running smoothly. Their impact is felt in every classroom, every office, and every interaction with students and families.”

Since 1986, California has formally recognized Classified School Employee Week as a time to honor the invaluable contributions of classified staff, whose work supports the daily operations of schools and the overall success of students.

Across MPUSD, classified employees serve in diverse and indispensable roles, including food and nutrition services, custodial and maintenance, transportation, office and administrative support, technology, campus safety, and instructional support, such as paraeducators and bilingual staff. Together, they help create safe, supportive, and inclusive environments where students can learn and thrive.

Their contributions extend far beyond operations. Classified professionals build meaningful relationships with students, support educators, and serve as trusted members of the school community often being the first friendly face a student sees in the morning or a steady presence throughout the school day.

The Board also recognizes the important partnership with the Monterey - J.C. Crumpton Chapter 93 of the California School Employees Association, which represents classified employees and works collaboratively with the district to support student success.

Through their daily work, MPUSD classified employees help advance the district’s goals supporting strong outcomes for students while contributing to a culture where every staff member feels valued, supported, and empowered.

The Board encourages students, families, staff, and community members to take time during Classified School Employee Week to recognize and thank the individuals whose dedication helps make learning possible each and every day.

Because at MPUSD, we’re better together, and our classified professionals help make every day count.
