MPUSD Board of Education Proclaims Teacher Appreciation Week and California Day of the Teacher

The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District Board of Education proclaims May 4 - 8, 2026, as Teacher Appreciation Week and May 13, 2026, as California Day of the Teacher, recognizing the extraordinary impact educators have on students, families, and the broader community.

The Board will adopt a formal Board resolution at its May 12, 2026, meeting to celebrate the dedication, passion, and expertise of MPUSD teachers who work each day to ensure all students have access to a high-quality education that prepares them for college, career, and life.

“At MPUSD, our teachers are truly at the heart of our schools and our community,” said PK Diffenbaugh, Superintendent, Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. “They do far more than deliver instruction. They inspire curiosity, build confidence, and help students discover their potential. This week, and every day, we are grateful for the difference they make.”

Teacher Appreciation Week, observed nationally during the first full week of May, shines a spotlight on educators who go above and beyond to support student success. California Day of the Teacher, celebrated this year on May 13, builds on that recognition, honoring teachers statewide under the 2026 theme: “California Educators: At the Heart of Communities, Powering Our Future.”

Across MPUSD, teachers play a critical role in advancing the district’s mission and the MPUSD Way fostering inclusive classrooms, elevating student voice, and supporting the academic, social, and emotional growth of every learner. Their impact extends beyond the classroom, serving as mentors, advocates, and trusted role models for students and families.

The Board of Education recognizes the collaborative partnership with the Monterey Bay Teachers Association, which represents certificated staff and works alongside district leadership to support strong educational outcomes for all students.

Through their daily work, MPUSD educators bring the district’s goals to life maintaining high expectations for student achievement while creating supportive, engaging environments where every student can thrive.

The Board encourages students, families, staff, and community members to take time during Teacher Appreciation Week and California Day of the Teacher to recognize and thank the educators who make a lasting difference in the lives of young people.

Because at MPUSD, every person matters, and our teachers help make every day count.
