MPUSD Embraces National STEM Day on Saturday, November 8

Every year on November 8, the nation marks National STEM Day—a moment to spotlight the critical role that science, technology, engineering and mathematics play in preparing students for an ever-changing world.

At MPUSD, we are proud to join that celebration, and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that all students, from preschool through grade 12, have meaningful access to STEM learning experiences.

MPUSD has long recognized that foundational STEM skills must begin early. In June 2025, the district was selected as one of only 30 organizations across California to join the “Count Play Explore” professional learning and coaching cohort, a $350,000 grant project to strengthen early mathematics and science education from birth through 3rd grade. mpusd.net

Through this work, MPUSD is deepening educator expertise, lifting the quality of early-learning coaching, and developing implementation plans to support young learners’ success in math, science and computer science. mpusd.net

Equity and access are central to meaningful STEM education.

MPUSD’s commitment to breaking down barriers is evident: for the fifth consecutive year, Seaside High School earned the College Board AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award. Even more impressively, this year Seaside High was among just 69 schools nationally to receive the award for both AP Computer Science Principles and AP Computer Science A — underscoring MPUSD’s success in expanding access to high-demand computer science courses for young women. mpusd.net

In today’s global economy, STEM skills are key drivers of innovation, problem-solving and career opportunity. On National STEM Day, MPUSD reminds our community that STEM isn’t just about formulas and labs—it’s about curiosity and creating solutions.

From coding and robotics to engineering design and data thinking, STEM disciplines empower students to ask questions, test ideas, collaborate and persevere. They prepare learners for the workplace of tomorrow—and strengthen our community here on the Monterey Peninsula.

On National STEM Day and throughout November, families and community partners are encouraged to engage in STEM learning with students.

  • Ask your child what they are curious about and explore a related STEM activity at home.

  • Attend a school open house or STEM night at your child’s campus.

  • Encourage exploration of coding apps, maker kits, or simply building something together.

  • Celebrate effort and growth—STEM is as much about trying again as it is about getting it right the first time.

As we mark National STEM Day on November 8, MPUSD invites everyone to celebrate the spirit of innovation, problem-solving and lifelong learning.

You can also have your student participate in our Saturday Academy partnership with MPC Monterey's Family STEM Day on Saturday, November 15. More information is here.
