Our Programs & Teachers

MPUSD Provides a full continuum of service options. We proudly and diligently serve over 1800 students with disabilities within our public schools. Not all children who have disabling conditions require special education. The intention of our programs are to support students in developing compensatory strategies to disabling conditions that impact a student's access to a full educational program. If you are a parent or guardian of a child who you suspect has a disabling condition that requires special education we welcome you to contact one of the following MPUSD representatives:

Referrals for infant & preschool children who reside within the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District:
Michelle Sturgill
Infant Intake Coordinator
831-901-5029

Referrals for children attending private schools within MPUSD's geographical attendance area or who live in MPUSD and attend private schools outside of the MPUSD boundaries:
Heather Cheatham
Director, Special Education

Referrals for school-aged children (TK-Adult Transition) who are currently enrolled in MPUSD Schools:
Please submit a written request for assessment for special education to your child's school site administrator and the site school psychologist that includes (at minimum) your child's name, birth date, information related to your concerns, and your contact information.

During the regular school year all requests for assessment will be reviewed and a written response will be provided within 15 calendar days, excluding MPUSD holidays in excess of 5 days. During summer and MPUSD extended holiday sessions requests for special education assessment will reviewed upon the return to school. You can find all MPUSD school calendars here.

Special Education Transportation Services

Students may be determined to be eligible for Special Education Transportation services if, due to their individualized needs, they are educated at a campus other than their home school, or if their health, mobility, vision, and/or hearing impact the student's safety to the point they cannot be expected to arrive to school in a manner that is commensurate with their same-aged peers. Other factors in determining eligibility for transportation services will be used on an individualized basis.

English transportation forms can be found here. You will need to submit this form through the Frevvo System.

Welcome, Military Families!

The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) serves military Families with special needs. A EFM is defined as a Family member with any physical, emotional, developmental or mental disorder that requires special medical treatment, therapy, education, training or counseling. The EFMP is a mandatory enrollment program for sponsors with qualifying family members. Enrollment in the EFMP ensures maximum provision of services to the Family throughout the sponsor's career. The EFM program works with military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated community support, housing, educational, medical and personnel services to Families with Special Needs.
