Staff Update #5: March 13

MPUSD Staff,


Thank you for your patience and understanding as together we address the Coronavirus and its impacts on our school system, students, families and staff. Your level of professionalism, hard work, and calm in the face of adversity is inspiring. Thank you for all you continue to do each day to support our families and community -- your work means so much to so many, especially at this time. 


The safety and well-being of our community continue to remain at the forefront of our decision making. We realize that any decision we make regarding school closures will have impacts on many and we consult with both local and state authorities prior to making any decision.


Our state and local health and government entities have expressed the need to increase our preventative measures to reduce the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and the various ways we as communities can work together to do so. Accordingly, the Monterey County Office of Education and Monterey County school district superintendents in conjunction with the Monterey County Health Department have decided to close all public schools and extracurricular programs in Monterey County schools for the remainder of March. All Monterey County schools will be closed starting Monday, March 16 through Tuesday, March 31. 


For MPUSD, we will follow the countywide closure and this means students will NOT return to school after Spring Break until Wednesday, April 1.


At this time, staff who are not contracted to work over spring break should plan on returning to their site Monday, March 30th. Staff contracted to work during spring break should continue to fulfill their assigned duties over spring break. 


To all staff who are scheduled to work, thank you for your continued commitment during this time of uncertainty. If you have special circumstances or need additional time off, please work closely with your department/site assigned human resource specialist. 


Over the next two weeks (Spring Break), district leadership will continue to consult with local and state authorities and may make the decision to extend school closures and move to alternative non classroom based learning or make other changes to staff schedules. If this happens we will be sure to communicate information through email, ParentSquare, our website, and social media.
