Update #1: FYI: Coronavirus Information

February 3, 2020

Dear MPUSD Families,

We have received several inquiries about the new coronavirus over the past week, and we want to provide information to our families about this global health emergency, as well as remind families about MPUSD’s illness policy.

MPUSD is closely monitoring updates by the federal, state and county health departments so that we can provide factual information and recommendations to all of our school families. There are NO confirmed cases in Monterey County at the time of this notice. There is NO immediate threat to the general public, no special precautions are required, such as masks,  however everyone should continue to follow preventative measures for contagious illnesses such as the seasonal flu.

As a reminder of MPUSD’s illness policy, please do not send your child to school if they are feeling sick. Keeping your sick child home will be a great benefit for the health and wellness of our students and staff. Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Symptoms of influenza can vary, but generally include a high fever, headache, chills, body aches, sore throat, and cough. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to prevent influenza is as follows below or you can visit MPUSD’s webpage for when to keep your child at home.

Tips to Prevent The Flu:
  • Get vaccinated every year
  • Avoid close contact with sick people
  • Frequent handwashing with soap
  • Stay at home if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Individuals with chronic health issues and/or individuals experiencing severe symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional.
  • See more prevention tips here or here from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
We thank you for your cooperation and support. If you have questions or concerns, you are welcome to contact our school nurses by reaching out to your school office.
