MPUSD Nutrition Services Supervisor

Ahead of National School Lunch Week, Monterey Peninsula Unified School District Nutrition Services Supervisor, Joseph Velazquez, shared insights into his role and the critical impact of school meals on student success. Velazquez emphasized the importance of nutrition for students, explaining how well-balanced meals help them stay focused and perform better academically.

“It's important to feed the kids so they stay in tune and it enables them to learn more and pay attention so they can get the best education that they possibly can,” Velazquez said.

One of the key focuses for MPUSD Nutrition Services is promoting equity and diversity through its meal offerings. Velazquez noted that the district serves a highly diverse student body, and their goal is to ensure the menu reflects this diversity.

"We don’t want to focus on one cuisine—whether it’s Mexican, Asian, or any other. We aim to include a variety of options so every student feels represented," he explained.

By celebrating cultural diversity and incorporating themed weeks and special events into the menu, MPUSD is fostering a more inclusive environment in the cafeteria.

Velazquez, who oversees staffing for the district’s after-school programs and ensures compliance with nutrition protocols, spoke about his hands-on role. Whether covering shifts, adjusting menus, or even delivering meals, Velazquez is committed to ensuring smooth operations.

“It’s all hands on deck every day to make sure our students get the best service possible,” he shared.

Velazquez’s passion for working with students is clear. A Salinas native and father of two, he enjoys the opportunity to give back to his community. He coaches Little League in his free time and cherishes his interactions with students from kindergarten through high school.

“I’ve always wanted to work for a school district, and now I’m fulfilling that dream,” Velazquez said.

In addition to fostering diversity, MPUSD Nutrition Services prides itself on sourcing local and organic produce whenever possible. This commitment to sustainability and supporting local agriculture sets MPUSD apart from other districts. Velazquez praised the department’s forward-thinking leadership, particularly Director Misha James, for staying ahead of industry trends and changes in regulations.

As MPUSD continues to adapt to the evolving landscape of school nutrition, Velazquez remains dedicated to providing high-quality meals that nourish both body and mind.
