Maryela Gonzalez: 'That moment of connection is so important'

Attendance Clerk
Los Arboles Middle School
At Los Arboles Middle School (LAMS), Maryela Gonzalez plays an essential role as the school's attendance clerk, ensuring that every student is accounted for and supported in their academic journey. With over seven years of experience in the school district, including two years at LAMS, Maryela is a dedicated professional who takes pride in her work.
Each morning, Maryela starts her day by checking voicemails, emails, and messages from ParentSquare, ensuring that all student absences are properly reported. She also prepares rosters for teachers and keeps a close eye on the attendance system. If a teacher hasn’t submitted their attendance, Maryela sends them a friendly reminder and reaches out to parents when necessary to confirm student absences.
Her role goes beyond logistics; it involves connecting with both students and their families to ensure they understand the importance of regular attendance.
“I remind students that being at school helps them not miss out on important lessons and gives them the chance to grow relationships with their teachers and friends,” she says.
Maryela’s move to Los Arboles, after working with preschoolers at Marina Children's Center, has given her the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with older students.
“It’s exciting to see students come in and greet me in the morning,” she says. “They like to share stories about their weekends or ask for support, and it’s nice to have those conversations.”
Her role as a liaison between the school and families is particularly rewarding. Whether she’s speaking to parents on the phone or through ParentSquare, Maryela offers her help with compassion and understanding.
“Sometimes conversations with parents can be challenging, but I always remind them that we’re here to support them,” she explains. “If their child is having difficulties, whether it's with transportation or school attendance, we can work together to find solutions.”
Maryela's fluency in Spanish also provides comfort to many parents.
“I can hear the relief in their voices when they ask if I speak Spanish and I say ‘Yes.’ That moment of connection is so important,” she shares.
As a mother of two, including a middle schooler herself, Maryela can easily relate to the challenges parents face.
“Being a parent has taught me to be more detailed when reporting attendance, and I understand how important it is for kids to be in school,” she says. Her firsthand experience has not only improved her own children's attendance but also helps her empathize with the families she serves.
When she’s not at work, Maryela enjoys spending quality time with her children. Whether it’s visiting the beach, enjoying a meal at Olive Garden, or exploring the Monterey Wharf, family time is a priority for her.
Maryela’s passion for her work is clear. Her dedication to supporting families, students, and teachers shines through in every interaction.
"Building relationships with students, parents, and staff makes me happy," she says.
