After School Academy (ASA) Elementary
After School Academy Focus
The ASA program operates from the ASES & 21st Century grants. Every site has unique qualities, however, they follow the same general guidelines for providing a positive and stimulating learning environment.
Academic Enrichment
- A broad range of activities implemented are designed to reinforce core academic subjects: reading/language arts, mathematics, history, social studies, and science. Tutoring and/or homework assistance is available daily. Community partners offer additional services and activities such as visual and performing arts, music, career awareness, physical activity, work preparation, promotion of health/nutrition, and Science, Technology, English, Art, and Math (STEAM) activities, etc.
Social and Emotional Support
- Such activities involve positive reinforcement, behavior management activities, positive youth development strategies, problem solving techniques, sportsmanship practices in group recreation, small group discussions, promoting self confidence, student leadership, bullying and gang prevention. Other youth development activities are implemented based on student needs and interests using the Positive, Behavior, Intervention, and Support (PBIS).
1. After School Academy (ASA): A free, grant-based program and available for students in transitional kindergarten through 8th grade. Students are invited to the program based on teacher referral for academic or social need. There is no open enrollment. Space is limited.

ASA is available at:
- Crumpton Elementary
- Del Rey Woods Elementary
- Marina Vista Vista Elementary
- Martin Luther King Elementary
- Ord Terrace Elementary

Enrollment is based on the following criteria by invitation only (no open enrollment):
- Homeless/Foster (State mandated requirement)
- Teacher Recommendation (Grant requirement based on Academic or Social/Emotional needs)
- Siblings (Grant plan to keep the family unit together)
- Prior Enrollment in ASA* (Grant plan to keep consistency for the student and family)
- Prior good attendance, participation, and behavior in ASA. (ASA is not a childcare or babysitting program.) The grant requires a comprehensive program, including Academic Support, Enrichment Activities, and Nutrition opportunities, and to ensure that spots are filled by students that are benefiting from what is offered. Students are expected to attend everyday they are in school and stay until the end of the program day.
- Balancing grade level groups (Grant requirement to maintain the student/staff ratio)
Once all spots have been filled by referred students, a waiting list of referred students by grade level will be initiated. Waiting lists do not roll over from one year to the next. NOTE: There is no guarantee that once a student attended the program they will automatically be enrolled in the program for the following year. Special Education students are accepted and an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meeting may be required prior to enrolling to be sure we are adequately trained to meet the needs of the student.
