Student Board Members
Each school year, the MPUSD Superintendent's Office recruits student leaders at each of our high schools to serve in an official capacity on our board of education. Students are sworn into the leadership position and must take an oath of office to participate, with a seat at the same table as our elected leaders.
The goal of appointing students to the board of education is to enhance communication and collaboration between our students and our governing board of education. We also aim to educate students about the importance of civic involvement and community leadership.
Students are required to complete an application and interview process to be considered for the board member role.
We began this initiative during the 2022-2023 school year. Marina High School student Sophia Bennett served as the first sworn student board member.
According to the board of education bylaws, student board members are allowed to cast votes on all open session agenda items as a way to show their formal opinion on the matter. That opinion will be recorded in the meeting minutes and happens before the board of education formally votes. (Bylaw 9150)
Additional students serve as board representatives and given time at the beginning of each school board meeting to provide updates at the podium on accomplishments, activities, and perspectives.
