MONTEREY PENINSULA USD NAMED NATION’S BEST COMMUNITIES FOR MUSIC EDUCATION

District is one of 18 school districts in California to receive this prestigious honor

Monterey, CA - The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District has been named as one of the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) on April 30, 2021. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education. MPUSD is only one of 18 school districts in California to receive this prestigious honor.

This award program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education.

“MPUSD has prioritized the arts over the past seven years, and has made an investment in music across the district to support the creativity and social and emotional needs of students,” said PK Diffenbaugh, Superintendent of Schools, Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. “I am incredibly proud of the fact that we introduced instrumental music into all 12 of our elementary schools, as well as the district’s three middle and three comprehensive high schools.”

This investment also supports what stakeholders of students, parents, teachers and community, continue to ask for each year.

The district was made aware of this award through the California Alliance for Arts Education and CREATE CA. Both organizations are merging to pursue their shared mission to ensure that a quality arts education is part of every student’s life. These organizations support districts in providing a full arts education to all students, in particular, African American, LatinX and indigenous students who experience significant barriers to access, participation and success in arts learning that are directly linked to pervasive racial inequities in the educational system.
